EU negotiations continue - but "time is short"

The Prime Minister and President von der Leyen spoke on the phone last night and have agreed to continue trade negotiations today – with both sides stressing time is short and substantial differences still remain.

  • The Prime Minister stressed that the negotiations were now in a serious situation, stressing time is short and it now looks very likely that an agreement would not be reached unless the EU position changes substantially.

  • The Prime Minister stressed that the UK could not except the situation where it was the only sovereign country in the world not to be able to control access to its waters – the EU position on this subject is simply not reasonable and if there was an agreement it needed to shift significantly in this area.

  • If a suitable compromise cannot be reached, Britain will leave the transition period on WTO terms on 1st January 2021.
