The Seafarer's Wages Act

Last week the Seafarers’ Wages Act received Royal Assent and is now law, boosting the pay of seafarers with close ties to the UK and cracking down on unfair practices.

  • Thousands of seafarers regularly entering UK waters should enjoy better pay protections and following the P&O Ferries case in 2022, we promised we would work swiftly to implement our nine-point plan for seafarers.
  • This new law is a key strand of our nine-point plan for seafarers, designed to protect those working on vessels operating an international service from being paid less than the National Minimum Wage. It will also require authorities to charge operators of vessels who do not provide evidence they are paying their seafarers the equivalent to the National Minimum Wage.
  • Our maritime sector is world-leading thanks to the thousands of hardworking seafarers working tirelessly to maintain supply chains and this Act ensures these workers are protected and rewarded.
