Theodore Dalrymple on why socialism doesn't work

A few days ago I posted a speech by Dan Hannan MEP at the Oxford Union about why socialism does not work. Here is the speech by Theodore Dalrymple from the same debate.

Everyone these days is so keen to state how poor they are, and how life is so hard for them. The thing is though when you do actually stop to think about it, no one (at least not in the UK) is really as badly off as people used to be.

If you do stop and think about it, even the "poorest of the poor" people live a life of great comfort compared to Kings of the past, they have far more creature comforts, they are warmer, better fed and better access to things like medical care and and transport than Henry VIII ever did.

Its one of those things really, everything is just a matter of prospective. The poorest today are better off than the richest of the rich were. Let alone the poorest of the poor back in Henry's time.

Its very true when you think about it, I mean if someone in the UK in 2015 starved to death, there would be absolute hell to pay.
