Nick Herbert on his visit to flood hit areas of Cumbria

He writes on Conservative Home about his visit. Here is an extract. I’ve been in Cumbria today to see the areas affected by the floods. I arrived early in Keswick where I met officials from the Environment Agency. Although the river levels had fallen considerably and homes were no longer flooded, the damage to homes had been done. And the water which had got into houses wasn’t just from the river – it was foul water which had risen from the drains. I talked to fire crews who were pumping flood water back into the river, and discovered that they were from Tyne & Wear and Lancashire. If you do stop and think about it, even the "poorest of the poor" people live a life of great comfort compared to Kings of the past, they have far more creature comforts, they are warmer, better fed and better access to things like medical care and and transport than Henry VIII ever did.
Its one of those things really, everything is just a matter of prospective. The poorest today are better off than the richest of the rich were. Let alone the poorest of the poor back in Henry's time.
Its very true when you think about it, I mean if someone in the UK in 2015 starved to death, there would be absolute hell to pay.
