It is, of course, possible to take this quote in an ironic way given that Abraham Lincoln died after being shot from behind by an assassin.

But the bullet which struck him down made him a martyr and made his memory an even stronger symbol of the things he stood for - which include opposition to slavery and the belief that government of the people for the people should rest on the ballot box.

You can kill a man like Lincoln but you cannot stand the ideals for which he dedicated his life. And there is no irony in that at all.
