Even the great Maggie found it hard to cut spending though. sure the GDP and the ability to pay off debt rose, but cutting spending has always been a problem for governments.

Its one of the reasons "sin taxes" are so dangerous. See there are always inititives for a new tax to prevent the consumtion of this or that, but then when that consumption does dry up, its forgotton that it was was a "sin tax" in the first place and the idea was to stop people buying it. So now there is a shortfall in the budget that has to be covered.

so its either a new tax on something to cover the short fall in the sin tax to pay for what ever the sin tax was paying for, or cuts to what ever the sin tax was paying for, but cuts dont go down well.
