Those ungrateful colonials seemed to get away with their treason on 4th July 1776. Though, actually, thinking about it, maybe it didn’t go so prosperously for them in the end. :o)

That example very much proves Harington's point, because at that time and for some years afterwards, in those parts of America under the control of what became the US of A or where sympathy for the rebel cause was strong, accusing the signatories of the Declaration of Independence of treason was a risky thing to do.

It could get you tarred and feathered, for instance.
