Nick Herbert on his visit to flood hit areas of Cumbria

He writes on Conservative Home about his visit. Here is an extract. I’ve been in Cumbria today to see the areas affected by the floods. I arrived early in Keswick where I met officials from the Environment Agency. Although the river levels had fallen considerably and homes were no longer flooded, the damage to homes had been done. And the water which had got into houses wasn’t just from the river – it was foul water which had risen from the drains. I talked to fire crews who were pumping flood water back into the river, and discovered that they were from Tyne & Wear and Lancashire. If you are aiming that comment at me personally I put in more than 25 years of hard work as a governor of various schools, including one in Copeland.
If you are aiming it at Copeland Conservatives in general I would point out that Trudy Harrison MP worked hard and successfully with the parents action group to get Whitehaven Academy sorted out and replace Bright Tribe after they failed to live up to the promises made when they were brought in.
If you are aiming it at the government, they have listened to the concerns of schools about the funding formula and ensured that total government support for schools has been protected in real terms - another £400 million was given to schools in the Autumn statement.
