Learning the lessons of Windrush

This week, the Home Secretary set out the actions which the government will take to implement the findings made in the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, so that the terrible mistakes experienced by the Windrush generation, under successive governments, can never be allowed to happen again.

  • The Windrush generation made an immeasurable contribution to this country – and we are doing everything we can to rectify the appalling treatment they suffered under successive governments.

  • The Home Secretary has now set out what action we will take to drive cultural change at the Home Office, to ensure this can never happen again. Greater emphasis will be placed on taking a more compassionate approach to individual applications – putting people above cases – and decision makers will be empowered to use their own discretion and pragmatism. This action will ensure cultural change at the department, leading to more diverse leadership.

  • Nothing can undo the suffering experienced by the Windrush generation, but we want them to be in no doubt that we will reform the culture of the Home Office to ensure it better represents all of the communities it serves.

If only it was just a Home Office problem - racism is endemic within the civil service, politics and society

Any racism is too much and I certainly would not claim there is no racism in the civil service, politics or society.

And we need to do our level best to stamp it out.

But the level of casual racism now is significantly less than it twenty years ago and much less than it was fifty years ago. I can think of any number of forms of discrimination that were tolerated when I was a boy which would be completely unacceptable now.
