And what happened with that one then? Did the accused get off?

Twenty of the accused were executed.

The proceedings were subsequently declared unlawful, all the convictions quashed, and the accused retrospectively declared innocent, but although compensation was paid to their heirs it was a bit late for those who had already been pout to death.

I went to Salem a good few years ago whilst stateside. They still thrive on selling witch related stuff, like Halloween junk, to this day. Though they say the accused were not hanged from the to of gallows hill but from a ledge at the bottom (and from trees not a gallows as the name of the hill would suggest)
