Conference diary 6th October 2020

Speaking at Conservative Party Conference today, the Prime Minister promised to Build Back Greener, announcing that we will become the world leader in low-cost green energy – creating 60,000 more jobs, slashing carbon emissions and boosting exports.

  • We are transforming our country fundamentally and permanently for the better. We will not be blown off course by the pandemic – and now is the time to Build Back Better. We need to give people the chance to train for the new jobs that are being created every day – in new technologies and new ways of doing things.

  • Today, the Prime Minister will announce an investment of £160 million in ports and factories across the country to manufacture the next generation of turbines. As this Government becomes a world leader in low-cost green energy, we believe that in ten years’ time, offshore wind will be powering every home in the country.

  • This investment in offshore wind alone will help to create 60,000 jobs in this country – and accelerate our progress towards net zero emissions by 2050. Now, as we build back better we must build back greener. This sets us on our path towards a green industrial revolution, which will provide tens of thousands of highly-skilled jobs.

Throughout our virtual conference, we have continued to set out how we are transforming our country fundamentally and permanently for the better. We will not be blown off course by the pandemic, but will continue to deliver on the priorities of the British people, and build back better from coronavirus.

  • We are launching Job Entry Targeted Support to support those left jobless because of coronavirus, backed up by £238 million. A Template Press Release can be found here.

  • We will fix our broken asylum system by bringing forward legislation, ensuring it is firmer and fairer.

  • We have set out plans to better connect all four nations in the UK, ensuring we have the right connections to support, sustain and strengthen communities.

  • We are creating a ‘Generation Buy’ to help people achieve their dream of home ownership – by creating long-term fixed-rate mortgages with five per cent deposits, to help young people get onto the housing ladder even if they have only a small deposit.

  • We are opening a new Conservative Party headquarters in Leeds and launching a Blue Wall Fund, demonstrating our commitment to delivering for people who placed their trust in us, many for the first time, last December.

  • We are building 40 new hospital projects by 2030 – the biggest hospital building programme for a generation.
