Helping vulnerable elderly people: the Warm Homes Discount

Today the government is announcing that the Warm Homes Discount will automatically benefit over one million vulnerable pensioners with lower energy bills – helping them with the cost of living. 

  • We all know how important it is that people keep their homes warm during the cold winter months, which is why we have worked with energy suppliers to automatically apply a discount to eligible pensioners’ fuel bills. 
     
  • This will save vulnerable pensioners – those receiving Pension Credit – £140 off their bills without them having to lift a finger. A further 220,000 pensioners who meet part of the eligibility criteria but are not yet benefiting will receive a letter encouraging them to claim via a dedicated helpline, and we will also be extending the Warm Home Discount Scheme until at least March 2022.
     
  • The government is committed to actively helping pensioners on low incomes with their energy bills, reducing the pressures on vulnerable customers who may be worried about the cost of living.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
