A catch-up plan for Britain's children

Today the government is announcing a £1 billion Covid catch-up plan which will help head teachers to provide extra support to children who have fallen behind while out of school, so that every young person gets the education and opportunity they deserve.
  • The government is determined to get all children back to school from September and will bring forward plans on how this will happen as soon as possible. But Britain cannot afford for any of our children to lose out as a result of Covid-19.

  • That is why the government is today confirming a £1 billion package to help schools catch up, which will comprise:

    • A £650 million will be made available for state schools in England, over the 2020-21 academic year, to help head teachers provide extra support to children who have fallen behind, through interventions like small group tuition – which evidence shows is particularly effective. It will be for schools to decide how to spend this money.

    • At the same time, we are putting forward £350 million towards high-quality tuition for the most disadvantaged children. This will help accelerate their progress and prevent the educational attainment gap widening – ensuring we don’t reverse the progress the Conservatives have made since 2010.

  • This builds on the work the Government has already provided to ensure no child is left behind, such as a £100 million investment in remote education – including delivering laptops and internet access to those who need them most. This is also on top of the £14 billion three-year funding settlement announced last year – recognising the additional work schools will need to do to help students to catch up.

  • The government remains determined that every young person, no matter their age or where they live, gets the education, opportunities and outcomes they deserve, by spending it on measures proven to be effective.
