Quote of the day 25th May 2018

“I love being a Scot.
I also value being British.
I adore the fact that the UK does not force me to choose between the two – nor rank them, nor seek to limit my identity."

(Ruth Davidson MSP, Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party)

That is another strange one. If someone asks me, or a form asks me for my nationality I always reply "English". My driving licence says "England" rather than "Britain"

though if there is a limited answers box, then i have no objection to ticking british

I'm 100% with Ruth on this one.

Why can't people have multiple identities? And why should anyone be forced to choose between them or rank them?

I self-identify as British because that enables me to celebrate the English and Scottish parts of my heritage. But I think one of the wonderful things about the United Kingdom is that it can accept that people can be British and also English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish - or more than one of the above.

If, God forbid, the UK were to break up in my lifetime I would not stop thinking of myself as British any more than Brexit will stop me recognising that I also have a European heritage.

Incidentally my driving licence says "UK" within an EU-style ring of what look like yellow stars on a blue background. My passport refers to my being a citizen of both the United Kingdom and the EU.

Doubtless the next ones will change.
