22 more free schools.
The government has announced that there will be 22 new free schools to create
thousands of new school
places in
underperforming areas, to ensure that every child has the best start in life.
Key facts:
- The Education Secretary confirmed last week that 22 applications to create new free schools have been successful – creating an extra 19,000 places in the areas that need them most, taking us closer to delivering on our pledge to create one million new school places by 2020.
- The latest approvals are in areas of the country most in need – with the lowest educational performance, limited capacity to improve or no existing free schools – so that more young people can benefit from attending a free school, which are outperforming other state-funded schools.
- Labour want to scrap free schools, undoing all of this progress and taking choice away from parents, as they once again put their own ideology ahead of what is best for Britain’s young people.
Why this matters:
A great education is the key to unlocking every child’s potential, and this announcement means that more young people
can benefit from a great free school opening in their area.
