International Energy Agency praises UK as an ‘inspiration’ on climate change

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has praised the UK as an ‘inspiration’ to other countries for our leadership on climate change and major progress on emissions reductions.

Key facts
  • The IEA in its in-depth review of the UK’s energy policies have welcomed our reforms to promote decarbonisation and clean energy technology innovation.
  • As the IEA say ‘the UK has walked the talk’ – our action is means that in 2017, energy-related CO2 emissions in the UK reached the lowest levels since 1888.
  • Countries around the world should be looking to us as an ‘inspiration’ in decarbonisation efforts, according to the IEA.
  • The report also finds that our rapid reduction in carbon emissions was achieved after significant renewable investment, putting us on track for renewables to generate 50 per cent of our electricity by 2030.

Why this matters:

This report hails Britain as a world leader in shifting to a greener, cleaner economy after cutting emissions by more than 40 per cent since 1990.

But we are going further by investing in renewables and becoming the first major economy to legislate for net-zero emissions to end our contribution to global warming entirely.
