Delivering for the poorest in society
Last week, research from the IFS showed that the Conservative government's balanced approach to the economy is delivering for the poorest in society.
- Absolute poverty is at its lowest ever level – it was 19 per cent in 2017–18, down from 22 per cent in 2011–12.
- Material deprivation among working-age families is 20 per cent lower under the Conservatives and has fallen amongst pensioners too.
- Earnings growth since the 2008 recession has been strongest for low earners – thanks in part to our National Living Wage and changes to the personal allowance.
