Remembering VE Day

This month we have been remembering the brave men and women who took part in the Normandy landings.

Next year will be the 75th anniversary of VE Day when we should remember the sacrifices of all those who contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany and her fascist allies.

The Business Secretary has announced that next year’s May Bank Holiday will be moved to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, allowing us all to pay tribute to those who served in the Second World War.

Key facts:
  • The early May Bank Holiday in 2020 will move from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
  • The occasion will remember the contribution of British, Commonwealth and Allied armed forces personnel, as well as allowing us to pay tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, in the UK Armed Forces.
  • Commemorative events will take place over the three-day weekend, including local street parties and the Nation’s Toast, where over 20,000 pubs will encourage patrons to raise a glass to the heroes of the Second World War.

Why this matters:

VE Day was a hugely significant and historic moment, and it is important we commemorate and remember the sacrifice and heroism shown by all of the brave men and women who were involved in the titanic struggle to save the world from one of the greatest evils in all of history.
