Helping Ukraine with nuclear safety

The reckless and atrocious behaviour of invading Russian troops towards nuclear facilities in Ukraine demonstrates both how essential it is that the world helps Ukraine to defeat this illegal invasion, and that there will be a major need to rebuild.

In West Cumbria we have possibly the largest collection of nuclear expertise in the world and have therefore been interested and pleased to see that the British government is looking to support Ukraine on this issue.

This week the British government announced further support for Ukraine’s energy sector, providing nuclear safety equipment to reinforce Ukraine’s energy security. 

  • Energy systems play an indispensable role in ensuring national security and economic resilience, so we must continue to support Ukraine to deliver these vital services.
  • That is why the UK government has announced an additional £5 million of support to provide safety and security equipment to Ukraine’s civil nuclear sector, including personal protective equipment, communications systems, and radiation monitoring equipment.
  • This vital equipment will help to reconnect power across Ukraine and ensure their frontline is full equipped to face Russia’s brutality.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
