Updating the Online Safety Bill

The drama in Downing Street must not upset the regular work of government, and this week the Culture Secretary announced new measures in the Online Safety Bill, to provide tougher protections for journalism.

  • While online platforms must do more to combat illegal and abusive content, it is vital that we protect people’s access to quality journalism online ensuring everyone can access the news where they want to online.
  • That is why the government is amending the Online Safety Bill so news content posted on social media sites remains viewable on their sites while they are under review by moderators, and requiring social media sites to notify publishers before removing news content.
  • Conservatives believe in protecting media freedom and the invaluable role of a free press in our society and democracy. We are clear that online safety regulation must protect the vital role of the press in our society. This is why we have provided protections for recognised news publisher content and journalistic content.
