Fairer rules for Pre-Payment meters

The government has announced new rules for energy suppliers on the installation of pre-payment meters – protecting vulnerable customers as we give people more control over their energy.

  • The appalling instances earlier this year of customers having their homes invaded and prepayment meters installed were completely unacceptable, so it is vital that action is taken to prevent this from happening again.
  • That is why today, after Government intervention, Ofgen has announced new rules on the installation of pre-payment meters, including preventing their installation for customers aged over 85 or with a terminal illness, requiring at least 10 attempts to contact customers before their installation, and giving customers credit to prevent loss of energy supply.
  • These measures will help to protect the most vulnerable customers – including the elderly and critically ill – while ensuring that all consumers are protected by a higher standard of service from suppliers.
