Peter was nearly ten thousand votes ahead on the first ballot, and after second preferences increased his lead, winning with a majority of nearly eleven thousand.
The second round votes were:
Peter McCall (Conservative) 41,345
Reg Watson (Labour) 30,437
The turnout increased over the county as a whole by nine percentage points. I would of course like to see a turnout which was much higher still but at least it was moving in the right direction
