Controlling the India variant
Health experts and the government are advising people in the areas where the new Covid-19 Variant is spreading to be extra cautious - as the Prime Minister set out on Friday 14 May, before the authorities in England moved to Step 3 of the roadmap.
- Evidence is showing the Covid-19 variant first identified in India is spreading fastest in Bedford, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Hounslow, Kirklees, Leicester and North Tyneside.
- As such, the government published guidance on Friday 14 May which states that people living in these areas should meet outside rather than inside where possible, keep two metres apart from people you do not live with, and everyone should avoid travelling in and out of affected areas unless it is essential, for example for work or education.
- We are continuing to work closely with local authorities and we continue to encourage people to get tested twice a week for free and isolate if you are positive, continue to work from home if possible, and when you get the call – get the jab.
