The P&O Ferries sackings

People of every shade of political opinion in Britain were shocked - as I certainly was - by the manner in which P&O ferries sacked hundreds of workers yesterday.

That is also the position of the government which has said that the manner in which P&O Ferries made 800 staff redundant yesterday was completely unacceptable and has promised to work to support impacted workers and engage closely with P&O over this decision.

  • Reports of workers being given zero notice and escorted off ships with immediate effect, while being told cheaper alternatives would take their roles, is unacceptable and insensitive behaviour.
  • The government is working to ensure workers are being signposted to the most relevant support and discussing the matter with trade unions. We have also directly shared our concern and anger with P&O over this decision.
  • Whilst the pandemic has caused a devastating impact on many travel companies, including P&O, this is no way to treat workers, and we will continue to engage closely over the coming days.
