Agreement with Albania on asylum seekers
Today the UK government has announced a new deal with Albania to deliver a ‘rapid removal scheme’ which is designed to ensure that Albanian asylum seekers with no right to be in the UK are returned home as soon as possible.
- Large numbers of Albanians who do not have a valid reason to come to the UK are being lied to by people smugglers to take treacherous journeys across the channel to this country. But many of these people have no valid reason to claim asylum in the UK. If we allow people who are not genuine asylum seekers to jump the immigration queue, this will undermine confidence in our immigration system and the first people to suffer in consequence will be genuine refugees.
- That is why the government has secured an agreement with Albania to tackle this which will start from next week. Under the agreement, Albanians’ asylum applications will be processed immediately and those with no right to be here will be returned to Albania as soon as possible.
- The government is taking swift action to tackle Channel crossings and save lives - the aim is to protect vulnerable Albanians and other vulnerable migrants while securing our borders.
