Evelyn Hall, writing under the pen-name S.G. Tallentyre in her 1906 book "The Friends of Voltaire" attributed this view to Voltaire, which he did undoubtedly hold. 

The words are usually misattributed to Voltaire himself, but they are in fact Hall's words rather than his.

No matter, they are a sound principle and the constant threats to free speech illustrated so vividly yesterday by the stabbing of Salman Rushdie illustrate so clearly why we must stand up for that principle.
