Helping low income households get access to broadband at affordable rates
Today, the government urged all broadband providers to help low-income households access discounted mobile and internet deals, as we continue to ease the pressure of rising living costs.
- In the face of global inflationary pressures, the government is helping households in the UK with rising costs, and continues to look at other ways to help.
- That is why the government has launched a new service allowing internet providers to verify, with customers’ permission, whether they are in receipt of a relevant benefit and therefore eligible for extra financial support – which will go live this week to save households hundreds of pounds a year.
- Some of the biggest network operators have already committed to take advantage of this new scheme, including Virgin Media O2, and I hope and expect that other providers follow their lead to that everyone eligible for a social tariff can access one.
