Quote of the day 6th January 2016

"Can I ask the Prime Minister to reject the view that sees terrorist acts as always being a response or a reaction to what we in the West do?

Does he agree with me that such an approach risks infantilising the terrorists and treating them as children when the truth is they are adults entirely responsible for what they do?

No one forces them to kill innocent people in Paris or Beirut.

Unless we are clear about that, we will fail even to understand the threat we face, let alone confront it and ultimately overcome it."

It was for asking this question in parliament after the terrorist attacks in Paris that Labour MP and former shadow minister Pat McFadden appears to have been branded "disloyal" and sacked from Jeremy Corbyn's frontbench team.

I am very glad that I am a member of a party where expressing such views is permitted and not one where they are grounds for dismissal.

John Woodcock tweeted: "If you can't state these views [about the Paris attacks] and be a shadow minister then our party really is being driven off a cliff."
