Another version of "Rejoice in the Lord Alway"
Beautiful as the Purcell version of "Rejoice in the Lord Alway" which I posted as today's Sunday music spot is, there is also another, better known piece of English church music set to those words.
Here is Guildford Cathedral choir singing an older anthem set to the same words. I once read a humorous glossary of English church music which described the term "Anon" as "A composer with many pseudonyms including Farrant, Tye and Redford."
This anthem proves the point, it has sometimes been attributed to John Redford but nobody really knows who wrote it.
What we do know is that for hundreds of years choirs, congregations and visitors to churches have found this anthem a delight to sing and listen to.
