He writes on Conservative Home about his visit. Here is an extract. I’ve been in Cumbria today to see the areas affected by the floods. I arrived early in Keswick where I met officials from the Environment Agency. Although the river levels had fallen considerably and homes were no longer flooded, the damage to homes had been done. And the water which had got into houses wasn’t just from the river – it was foul water which had risen from the drains. I talked to fire crews who were pumping flood water back into the river, and discovered that they were from Tyne & Wear and Lancashire. For perhaps 42 of the 45 years since Britain joined the EU the utterly indefensible mess which was the Common Fisheries Policy was one of the strongest arguments against our membership.
I used to say that "Because fish move, it would actually be a good idea to have a rational common fisheries policy. What a shame we don't have one."
However, two or three years ago we finally - FINALLY - started to get some genuine and very significant reforms in the policy which is now massively different to what it was.
I will be interested to see what the document has to say about how the new policy is working.l
