HS2 construction begins

A huge landmark for transport in Britain today, as the Prime Minister marks the formal start of construction on HS2, which will be vital in boosting connectivity between our towns and cities, as well as creating around 22,000 new jobs as we get spades in the ground and build back better from coronavirus.

  • As the government seeks to kickstart our economic recovery, never has our mission to unite and level up the country been so important – and HS2 is at the heart of our plans to do so.

  • Construction formally begins on the project today, which will form the spine of our country’s transport network, boosting rail capacity and connectivity, as well as cutting journey times. The work is set to create around 22,000 new jobs, as well as hundreds of thousands of opportunities for UK businesses in the supply chain.

  • By creating jobs and apprenticeships, HS2 will fire up economic growth and help to rebalance opportunity across this country for years to come.
