Grades

Let's be honest: not one of the UK's major political parties comes well out of what happened with this year's student grades.

Pretty much the same mistakes were made by the Conservatives in England, the SNP in Scotland, Labour and the Lib/Dems in Wales and the NI parties in Northern Ireland.

Anyone in any of these parties who is trying to score points over it needs to take the beam out of their own eye: I think we all need to learn from it and make sure nothing like this ever happens again. Starting with getting students back to school, in a way which keeps them and teachers as safe as possible, in September. 

The above represents my own opinions and not necessarily anyone else's 

Below is the official line: just so there is no-misunderstanding, students will get whichever is higher out of the teacher-assessed grades and those previously awarded.


"Yesterday, the Education Secretary announced that Ofqual will be awarding students teacher assessed grades for this year’s A level and GCSE results, to offer young people the certainty and reassurance they deserve.

  • This has been an extraordinarily difficult year for young people who have been unable to take their exams. 
     
  • The Government worked with Ofqual to construct the fairest possible model to award grades equivalent to normal exam standards, but it has become clear that this process resulted in more inconsistency and unfairness than can be resolved through an appeals process. 
     
  • Together with Ofqual, the Government has decided that it is better to instead award teacher assessed grades for A Level, AS level and GCSE results. 
     
  • To ensure students can progress to higher education, the Government intends to remove temporary student number controls and work with the sector to create additional capacity. 
     
  • The Education Secretary has apologised for the distress this has caused young people and their parents. We hope this announcement will now provide the certainty and reassurance they deserve."

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
